Cleaning and disinfecting are of utmost importance these days. Cleaning is removing dirt and other contaminants from a surface using soap and water; disinfecting is killing pathogens using a solution of bleach, alcohol or other disinfectant. Clean first, then disinfect!

Wear disposable gloves and concentrate on your home’s high-traffic places and items. These include doorknobs, countertops, faucets and dining room chairs, as well as children’s game controllers and phones.

In your home’s entryway, why not set up a decontamination station? You can put hand sanitizer, alcohol wipes for your phone, other cleaning supplies and a small rubbish can. That way, items can be cleaned before carrying germs further into the home. It’s also a convenient place to set up a pegboard on which family members can hang face masks.

Clothes worn in public spaces should be laundered right away. Wash at the highest recommended temperature. (This might be a good time to think of expanding your home’s laundry area, especially if you’re washing more frequently and to store cleaning supplies.)

Clean your hands often. Use warm, soapy water and rub vigorously for at least 20 seconds. If soapy water is unavailable, use hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol.

If someone in your home is sick, if possible, have the sick person use a separate bathroom and bedroom. Stay separated from them as much as possible, and have them do their own cleaning. (Also, consider if you have enough rooms and spaces, for the size of your family in the long term.)
